JPG / JPEG — The Universal Web Format
JPG (or JPEG) is the most widely used image format on the web. It uses lossy compression to reduce file sizes significantly while maintaining acceptable visual quality for photographs. JPG is ideal for product photos, travel pictures, and any image where file size matters more than perfect pixel accuracy. However, JPG does not support transparency and repeated saving degrades quality.
PNG — Lossless Quality with Transparency
PNG uses lossless compression, meaning every pixel is preserved exactly as in the original. PNG also supports full alpha channel transparency, making it the go-to format for logos, icons, screenshots, and graphics with text. The tradeoff is larger file sizes compared to JPG — typically 2-5 times larger. Use PNG when quality and transparency are priorities over file size.
WebP — The Modern Web Format by Google
WebP is Google's next-generation image format designed specifically for the web. It achieves 25-35% smaller file sizes than JPG at equivalent visual quality and supports both lossy and lossless compression as well as transparency. WebP is natively supported by all modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari 14+, Edge) and is strongly recommended for websites looking to improve Core Web Vitals and PageSpeed Insights scores.
HEIC — Apple's High-Efficiency Format
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's modern format, default on iPhones and iPads since iOS 11. HEIC uses HEVC compression to deliver approximately 50% smaller files than JPG at the same quality. HEIC also supports transparency, multiple images per file (burst photos), and advanced metadata. Convert HEIC to JPG for universal compatibility, or convert JPG to HEIC for storage optimization in Apple ecosystems.
SVG — Scalable Vector Graphics
SVG is a vector format based on XML, meaning images are defined by mathematical paths rather than pixels. SVG files scale infinitely without quality loss, making them perfect for logos, icons, illustrations, and responsive web design. Unlike raster formats (JPG, PNG, WebP), SVG can be edited with code and animated with CSS or JavaScript.
GIF — Animated Graphics & Legacy Compatibility
GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) is best known for its animation support. GIF files are limited to 256 colors per frame, making them unsuitable for photographs but perfect for simple animations, memes, and low-color graphics. GIF is universally supported across all browsers and platforms, including older legacy systems.
BMP — Legacy Windows Bitmap
BMP (Bitmap) is the native Windows image format that stores pixels uncompressed. BMP files are 10-30 times larger than equivalent JPG files but are required by some older Windows applications, embedded systems, and industrial control software. Convert JPG to BMP only when compatibility with legacy systems is required.
TIFF — Professional Printing & Archiving
TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is the professional standard for commercial printing, publishing, and archival storage. TIFF supports multiple compression options including uncompressed, LZW lossless, and ZIP. It also supports CMYK color space for print workflows and high bit depths (16-bit, 32-bit). Convert JPG to TIFF when submitting images to professional print labs or publishers.
