Why Choose PNG Over JPG for iPhone Photos?

Two reasons, both practical.

• PNG is lossless. DEFLATE compression stores every pixel exactly as it was. JPG throws away a small amount of visual information every time it saves. If you plan to edit the photo — even just crop and color-correct — a lossless starting point avoids stacking compression on top of compression.
• PNG keeps transparency. It carries a full alpha channel with 256 levels of opacity per pixel. JPG has no alpha channel at all. If you plan to composite the photo, cut out part of it, or layer it in a design, PNG is the only one of the two that will do the job.

Why HEIC Needs Converting in the First Place

Apple switched to HEIC with iOS 11. HEIC uses the HEVC codec inside an HEIF container (ISO/IEC 23008-12) and stores photos at roughly half the size of an equivalent JPG. What About Portrait Mode and Live Photos?

Portrait mode photos convert normally — the depth-of-field blur is already baked into the rendered image, so the PNG you get is the photo as you see it on the iPhone. The depth map itself is a separate data layer inside the HEIC file and does not survive the conversion to PNG, because PNG has no channel for it. Live Photos contain a still frame plus a short video; only the still frame converts.
